Finasteride (Propecia) & Dutasteride (Avodart)
Uses & Benefits
- Treatment of Male Pattern Baldness (Androgenetic Alopecia): Another significant use is in the treatment of male pattern baldness, also known as androgenetic alopecia. DHT is implicated in the miniaturization of hair follicles in individuals genetically predisposed to hair loss. By reducing DHT levels, 5-alpha reductase inhibitors can slow down hair loss and, in some cases, promote hair regrowth.
- Topical application of finasteride has shown to be just as effective, if not more effective, as taking oral finasteride, without risk of systemic side effects!
- Treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): One of the main uses of 5-alpha reductase inhibitors is in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly known as enlarged prostate. By inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to DHT, these medications help reduce the size of the prostate gland, relieving symptoms such as difficulty urinating, frequent urination, and urinary urgency.
Side Effects & Considerations
The following are seen most commonly seen when these medications are taken orally (by mouth). It's important to note that not everyone experiences these side effects, and their severity can vary widely among individuals. Additionally, many side effects are reversible upon discontinuation of the medication. However, it's essential for individuals taking 5-alpha reductase inhibitors to discuss potential side effects with their healthcare provider and to report any concerns promptly.
- Sexual Side Effects: One of the most well-known side effects is related to sexual function. This can include decreased libido (sex drive), erectile dysfunction (difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection), decreased ejaculate volume, and potentially changes in orgasm sensation. These effects occur because DHT is involved in sexual function and its reduction can impact these processes.
- Breast Tenderness or Enlargement: Some individuals may experience breast tenderness or enlargement (gynecomastia) due to the hormonal changes caused by reduced DHT levels.
- Mood Changes: Some users report mood changes such as depression or anxiety. However, the evidence for a direct causal link is less clear compared to sexual side effects.
- Other Possible Side Effects: Less common side effects can include allergic reactions, rash, swelling (edema), testicular pain or swelling, and in rare cases, liver function abnormalities.
